A powerful contemporary abstract landscape by British artist Angela Wakefield, exploring the drama of a landscape caught beneath a vast and turbulent sky.
The composition is dominated by sweeping, expressive passages of charcoal, slate grey and deep black, broken by softer layers of dusky pink, lavender, pale blue and luminous white. Wakefield uses energetic, gestural brushwork to create a sense of shifting cloud, distant light and weather moving rapidly across an open landscape.
At the centre, a band of pale pink and silvery light stretches towards the horizon, creating an atmospheric focal point amid the darker surroundings. The suggestion of water, shoreline and distant terrain gradually dissolves into abstraction, allowing the painting to move between a recognisable landscape and an emotional response to place.
There is a compelling contrast between the brooding weight of the storm-filled sky and the delicate light emerging beneath it. Fleeting touches of pink and white illuminate the surface, giving the work a sense of movement, depth and changing weather.
Characteristic of Wakefield’s more expressive landscape paintings, the work is concerned less with literal topography than with light, atmosphere, colour and the physical sensation of being within a landscape.
Angela Wakefield is one of Britain’s Leading Urban Artists, and has twice been on the front cover of ‘Art of England’ and featured in ARTnews, attracting international attention and critical acclaim with her urban landscape paintings of New York, London & the North of England. Her style of painting has been described as ‘contemporary realism’, and is often favourably compared with Edward Hopper by collectors and art critics. Angela’s work is held in private collections in Europe and the USA, including the British Royal Family. Her admirers include leading figures in international business, filmmaking and the media.
