Angela Wakefield – Nocturne in Shambles Square, Manchester
This captivating original painting by Angela Wakefield portrays the iconic timber-framed architecture of Shambles Square in Manchester, illuminated under the night sky. With its striking contrast of glowing façades against a velvety black backdrop, the work captures both the history and the contemporary vibrancy of this celebrated city location.
Wakefield’s composition leads the viewer into the square itself, where warm lights, bustling outdoor tables, and lively street activity create a sense of movement and atmosphere. Her confident brushwork and bold use of colour – particularly the vivid blue paving that sweeps into the foreground – lend a modern, expressive energy to the timeless architecture.
Balancing architectural precision with painterly spontaneity, the piece resonates as both a cityscape and an exploration of mood, culture, and identity. It is a work that reflects the character of Manchester itself: historic, dynamic, and full of life.
This painting would serve as a striking focal point in any contemporary collection, combining elegance with dramatic visual impact.
History:
Shambles Square is a historic square situated right next to Manchester Cathedral, and is home to four main pubs: Crown & Anchor, The Old Wellington, Sinclair’s Oyster Bar, and The Mitre Hotel. The term “shambles” comes from the name of the street where butchers would slaughter and sell meat. The Old Wellington is one of the only surviving Tudor buildings in Manchester city centre.
